Buying a used car isn’t easy, even for the used car dealer. There are a lot of steps that need to be taken, not just with the car.The first thing that has to take place is someone has to locate vehicles worthy of purchase, ones that are still worthy of being driven. These vehicles are typically purchased at an auction. The dealer, or one of his representatives, will attend the auction to search for these vehicles. When at an auction you are surrounded by many other dealers who want that same vehicle. And then all out bidding war begins. Things move very fast. If the price tends to get to high a dealer will stop bidding on the vehicle and let it go to someone else. He wants to make money off of this vehicle, not own it for more than it is worth. A car purchased at an auction will have issues with it. The dealer that is bringing the car to the auction is not going to invest a lot of his time and money into the vehicle because he is not going to get a lot for it at the auction. When a vehicle is purchased at the auction the dealer who is purchasing has little to no time to review the vehicle to make sure that there is nothing major wrong with it, unless he shows up much earlier than the time the auction is going to take place.There are other avenues that a used car dealer will take to purchase his inventory. Sometimes a dealer will place an ad in the paper looking to either purchase vehicles or to take someone’s junk car. One example would be that someone had a vehicle in their possession and couldn’t afford to fix it and it was just sitting in their yard. A dealer would pay a very small price for this kind of vehicle and repair it to perfect working condition. He stands to make a great profit considering all he really has into the vehicle is repairs and time. No matter where a used car dealer finds his inventory, he still has to repair it. He will usually run through the car and make a detailed punch list on what needs to be fixed and start tackling it. In some cars, a new transmission is needed and depending on the vehicle, it is not that expensive of a repair. A dealer doesn’t like to have to put this kind of work into a car, but if he needs to he will.There are many aspects to a used car dealership; most are the same as running any business. Working capital needs to be there, advertising, bills and many other things.The one thing that makes it different is that these dealers are finding their product is a very large market. They too, not just the consumer, are taking a risk when looking for their inventory. They never really know what is under the hood until they are able to get it to their garage, and they have to purchase it for that to happen.Customers are also very important. Many used car dealerships gain customers through word of mouth. Everyone has purchased a used car and a lot of people can’t afford to purchase a new car.A used car dealership tends to have higher revenues than most businesses because they are buying their inventory at much lower than fair market value and selling it for at least market value. Any repairs that need to be made to the vehicle are usually done in house and they are only into it for the price of parts and the salary that they pay their mechanic, if they don’t do the repairs themselves.
